Zorge
|
The health resort Zorge was first mentioned in 1249, when it came to obtaining water rights for the cottage on the small copper smelter of the monastery Walkenried. By 1570 Zorge evolved into the most important industrial site of the former Duchy of Braunschweig. The first two locomotives built in Germany in 1842 for the state railway was built in Brunswick Zorge. Today you can enjoy pure nature in the southern Harz. Many small streams originate in the mountains and form a small river "Zorge" that winds through the town city. |
| Zorge has a museum of curiosity which also holds the tourist board. The museum is located on two floors and displays over 2500 small and large items objects of daily life for several centuries. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteer members. You will also find among other things a heated forest swimming pool, a beautiful health-resort garden and a minigolf course plus an excellent whisky distillery with a show room. |

The hammer mill in Zorge produces a selection of liqueurs and spirits from fruit, berries and herbs. It also produces Harz own whisky which is under the label of Glen Els after the name of the small river Elsbach which flows past the premises. This family run business where everything is produced by hand move to its current position from Wieda in 2005. The first whisky distillation took place in late 2002 and the first 278 bottles were released in early 2006. Each bottle is bottled by hand and hand-numbered. The family have several casks in bond and the latest bottling took place in 2008. The next casks, two sherry and one marsala cask will be ready for bottling in 2009. So far the whisky has been maturing for 3 - 4 years, but older ones are expected in the future. The warehouse has more than 150 casks maturing and in 2010 the first bottling will take place. You can visit the distillery and its shop. There is a nice museum and a smell sensation. You can sample the whiskeys and liqueurs before buying and special whisky tasting sessions are available. The owner Karl Theodor speaks very good English and is happy to show people around. |
