In the Harz there are a number of small private distillers and breweries which we would like to introduce to you. The HarzerGrubenlicht (Harzer pit light), has its orgins within the mining culture of the Harz. In 1934 August Picht an amateur mineral collector, visited the mines in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. In a disscussion with a veteran miner concerning the demise of the mines in the future and the extinguish of the miners light, came the idea of the harzer pit light, in liquid form. Today the company has passed down three generations, using the same secret family recipes prepared from 48 natural different herbs from all over the world. Only the current owner knows the exact recipe. Over a period of several weeks the schnapps is slowly ripen to produce a character not too sweet and slightly bitter. Before filling into bottles it is stored in wooden barrels. The resulting drink can be drunk neat, served over ice or mixed with lemonade to make a long drink. Footnote: What better way to welcome in the New Year than to raise a glass and toast "Prosit Neujahr". In addition to champagne or Sekt (German sparkling wine),or beer, you can be sure that many glasses of schnapps will be drunk on new years eve. Its not unfair to say that Germany is well known not only for its range of beers but also for the vast selection of schnapps which are often brought out after dinner to aid digestion or drunk at parties. |
