Harz offers a rich and varied cultural environment. From historic castles and palaces, to monasteries and churches nestled within the mountains, to old towns with their wooden framed buildings, to the larger towns such as Goslar and Quedlinburg, UNESCO world listed heritage sites. You can explore the many mines or walk above ground in castle gardens and parks, or walk along the many trails of the National Park. If you prefer to rest your legs than a ride on the narrow gauge steam train to the Brocken is to be welcomed. |

When the German poet Heine visited Harz, he wrote: "The spirit of the Mountains inspired me, it knew that a poet like me can write about such beautiful things, this morning it let me see the Harz, like no one else has seen it before" |

The museums in Harz are well looked after and although some are small the admission prices are low and most have nice displays, some can be very surprising. You can find theatres and productions in most towns, some are small and are performed in the local town hall (kurhaus), some are performed in theatres in Goslar, Wernigerode and Quedlinburg. You can experience stage productions such as opera and classical music in natural amphitheatres often accompanied by fireworks. |
| If the larger festivals are not for you than refer to the individual town pages, were you will find many rural festivals for things such as the potato, the herring, the cows dance ball and horse festival. Don't be shy to turn up at these village parties as the locals are very friendly and welcoming, and as always in Germany there will be enough food and drink to make the party go on till late. |
