Blankenburg at the north foot of the Harz Mountains and only a few kilometres away from the larger town of Wernigerode is a delightful town. Its historic old town hall and romantic winding small streets, and the old town hall ranks Blankenburg as one of Germany's fine examples of the Baroque age. |
| Towering over the city is Blankenburg castle and gardens, the castle is under continual conservation and an association was established in 2005 to save it. Just below is the so called small castle, which was built as a summer house by the prince around 1718. The gardens here are in the Baroque style and are part of the historic parks of Saxony Anhalt. |

In the town its well worth visiting St Bartholomew's church with its valuable furnishings, and a visit to the Museum of the Lodging House which is located in a half timber framed house built in 1684. The historic town hall dates back to the 16th Century, and shows some good examples of later Gothic period. Or you could just walk down Lange strasse with its richly decorated houses in the old part of town, or walk along the arcades which have been classified as historical monuments and were reconstructed in 1994. A quick look at the oldest house in town which dates to 1430 at 16 Bauersche Strasse. |
| Outside of town the former Cistercian monastery, Kloster Micaelstein has a fine museum of musical instruments. Also in the vicinity is a cliff called Devils Wall (Teufelsmauer), were you can obtain views into the deep gorges of the Harz Mountains.
